Why is Sleep so important to us?
Researchers say that sleep is very important for us to stay healthy, think clearly, be creative and productive, and remember events and information effectively. People who are sleep-deprived often feel unfocused, tired, and irritated. When we sleep, our brain analyzes and sorts ” the information received during the day “and organizes its own biological system.
It is known that any of our actions either strengthen existing chains of neurons, or create new ones. If we do not use any stored information for a long period of time, the neural connections corresponding to this knowledge are weakened. During the day, the brain does its daily work: it creates “or strengthens” neural connections responsible for important experiences, and weakens the connections of neurons responsible for insignificant information. Knowledge accumulated during the day is stored in short-term memory. During sleep, the brain converts our short-term memory into long-term memory. This occurs as a result of strengthening the synapses that support the necessary information. As a result, enhanced neural connections gain more energy, while unnecessary information is removed from our brain to make room for more useful information. This process helps improve memorization and learning.
The important thing is that the brain needs sleep to clear the brain and get rid of unnecessary information that would otherwise clog up the brain. Scientists from the University of Rochester (USA) have shown that when we sleep, the brain removes biochemical protein waste using a special system for collecting and removing garbage, known as the glyphatic system. During sleep, this system is activated. The glial system consists of glial cells that form channels. These tubular channels, in which the cerebrospinal fluid circulates, circumnavigate the circulatory system. Neurons seem to bathe in cerebrospinal fluid, absorbing garbage. The cerebrospinal fluid moves through the tubes and transfers biological waste to the blood vessels of the circulatory system. Interestingly, during sleep, the distance between neurons increases by sixty percent. Neural cells contract to expand channels for the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid, providing access to the glyphic system. Neuroscientists believe that the ineffectiveness of such cleaning can provoke problems with certain brain functions, in particular, with memory.
So, to be healthy and have a productive brain, you need to have quality sleep for a sufficient period of time to allow the brain time to complete all the necessary tasks that it needs to complete in order to be ready for the next day's meeting .
The nature of sleep is still controversial among scientists. No one has yet convincingly explained why a person needs sleep at all. If you don't let a person sleep, they will probably die. Although there is one interesting exception: there are cases when people did not sleep at all. Studies have shown that in such people, individual parts of the brain rested in turn.
This phenomenon makes us doubt the correctness of the theory of evolution. Clearly, being able to do without sleep is a huge advantage. If the theory of evolution was correct, now the Earth would be inhabited by people whose brains just rested in separate zones.
Lack of sleep reduces the quality of mental activity. But it's very individual.
Personally, as a researcher, I adhere to the version that a person needs sleep not for rest and not for the harmonization of personality. It is possible that a person is created exactly like this, needing sleep, in order to use the state of rest and the absence of external stimuli during this period.
