It depends on what is meant by rare books. If we are talking about old-printed and handwritten books, then the department of old-printed books and the department of manuscripts of the Russian State Library are the first to come to mind. These are mostly books with religious content.
The handwritten books are kept in the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts (RGADA). Some of them are also digitized.
There are rare book departments inThe historian (moved from the Historical Museum), and in the St. Petersburg National Welfare Fund.
