Painting is an art that was born almost with the advent of mankind. The first artists were cavemen. Rock carvings of animals dating from about 30,000-10,000 BC have been found on cave walls in southern France and Spain. Ancient man felt the need to depict the world around him on the surface. He drew everything he saw: wild animals, nature, hunting scenes. For drawing, early artists used natural materials that could be found at hand: earthen paints, charcoal, black soot, brushes made from animal hair, or simply painted with their fingers or hollowed out in stone.
