Nietzsche took this expression from the medieval troubadours, the love singers. So they called their science of versification and musical accompaniment, cheerful in the sense that this art, poems to music, makes the soul laugh. Nietzsche meant that modern philosophy should stop building systems and learn to improvise, and then it will find its own rules, rules for the existence of meaning, ceasing to obey the rules of natural sciences or logical “grammars”.
