If you mean our time, then everything is simple here – it's fashionable to be smart, to be interested in books, and also to post quotes from philosophers, to be an educated and cultured person. Of course, fashion does not always mean that all these followers are such.
And if you mean the popularity of Nietzsche during his lifetime, then it was not particularly (or not at all), however, like many writers/thinkers/philosophers. Nietzsche began to be harshly criticized somewhere in the 19th and 20th century. I think the popularity in this case has risen due to the multiple contradictions in Nietzsche's views.
