First of all, I would advise you to refer to the book “Introduction to Buddhology” by the remarkable scholar E. A. Torchinov — it provides a completely comprehensive knowledge of the basics of the history and doctrine of Buddhism.
Secondly, you need to read the original texts — of course, with comments. This is, of course, the Dhammapada. Then I would recommend the Starting wheel of Learning Sutra (Dharmachakra-pravartana Sutra), and for the basic understanding of Mahayana Buddhism, the Heart of perfect Wisdom Sutra (Prajna — paramita Hridaya Sutra). The texts of the sutras (at least these) are very small, and you can easily read them in one evening.
